A number of Avanti rail services on the west coast will be suspended throughout Saturday due to train managers’ strikes.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Just one train per hour will run from London to Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow, the company said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It also issued an apology after announcing that no services would run through North Wales, Shrewsbury, Chester, Blackpool and Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The RMT union said the strike was the “culmination of months of neglect”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Avanti train managers are taking a series of measures against the “imposition of rosters,” an RMT official said, and also plan to go on strike on November 6.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In early October, Transport Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said Avanti services had been “unacceptable” after a timetable change in August. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The operator was widely criticized for reducing service from seven trains per hour to at least four trains and halting ticket sales, blaming “severe staff shortages”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It used to rely on workers working overtime to provide services. But the company said train drivers suddenly stopped volunteering for overtime in early August, leading to a shortage of available staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch described Avanti as “one of the worst operators we have ever tried to deal with”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He added: “They have treated our members appallingly and this strike action is the culmination of months of neglect and a strong response to bosses’ arrogance.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Avanti’s contract to manage the London-Glasgow service was recently extended until April as the Department for Transport assesses whether the company “can run this crucial route to a standard that passengers deserve and expect”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Between April 2021 and March 2022, there were 21.6 million passenger trips on duty, according to government data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Prior to Avanti’s recent troubles, they were expected to sign a new 10-year deal that would include continuing as shadow operator for the HS2 high-speed rail links.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The company urged commuters to “review your entire journey before traveling” on strike days and said those who booked tickets for the affected days could ask for a full refund.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

An Avanti representative said: “We are disappointed with this industrial action and apologize for any inconvenience this will cause.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
