Chinese video platform TikTok has told users that some of its employees in China have access to the data of UK and European Union accounts.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The social media giant said the “privacy policy” was based “on a proven need to do its job”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It has come under scrutiny from authorities around the world, including the UK and US, over concerns that data could be leaked to the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Earlier this week, a US official called for the app to be banned in America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    TikTok said the policy applies to “the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Elaine Fox, the platform’s data protection officer for Europe, said in a statement on Wednesday that a global team helped keep the user experience “consistent, enjoyable and secure”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Although TikTok currently stores European user data in the US and Singapore, “We permit certain employees of our group of companies in Brazil, Canada, China, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea and the United States to remotely access European TikTok user data,” said Mrs. Fox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    “Our efforts are focused on limiting the number of employees with access to European user data, minimizing out-of-region data flows, and storing European user data locally,” she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    She also said that the approach is “subject to a robust set of security controls and approval protocols and is done through methods recognized by the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    That same week, a senior US communications regulator official said TikTok should be banned in America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “I don’t think there’s a way forward for anything other than a ban,” said Brendan Carr, a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) commissioner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    He added that he believes that “there is no world where you can come up with enough protection for your data that you can have enough confidence that it won’t fall back into the hands of the… [Chinese Communist Party].”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    TikTok’s owner ByteDance has repeatedly denied that it is controlled by the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The app has been extensively scrutinized by authorities in the UK, EU and US. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The UK Parliament shut down its TikTok account in August after MPs raised concerns about the risk of data being shared with the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Senior MPs and colleagues had called for the account to be removed until TikTok gave “credible assurances” that no data could be shared with Beijing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The app was also under investigation by the Irish Data Protection Commission – its lead regulator in the EU – over two privacy-related issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The regulator is investigating TikTok’s processing of children’s personal data and whether it has acted in accordance with EU laws when transferring personal data to other countries, such as China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Meanwhile, in 2020, a US national security body ordered ByteDance to sell its American operations amid concerns that user data could be shared with Chinese authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    In June this year, TikTok announced that it had migrated US users’ information to servers operated by American software giant Oracle in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Last month, TikTok denied a report that a China-based team at ByteDance planned to use the app to track US citizens’ locations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    TikTok said it has never been used to “target” the American government, activists, public figures, or journalists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    On Wednesday, Ms Fox also said the app does not collect precise location data from users in Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    TikTok is the fastest growing social media app in the world and has been downloaded nearly 4 billion times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, the company has generated more than $6.2bn (\u00a35.4bn) in gross revenue from in-app spend since its launch in 2017.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
