They also use electric motors, which reduces noise and pollution compared to standard aircraft. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >It has been argued that they could help reduce traffic congestion in crowded cities without being too expensive for customers.  They were also seen as an alternative for transporting cargo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >In Europe, the industry is hoping to get flying taxis airborne in time for the Paris 2024 Olympics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<div >\n<ul >\n<li>You may be able to book an air taxi within three years<\/li>\n<li>Flying taxi hub opens for demonstrations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which has faced industry pressure to clarify the rules governing its flight, said Monday it is proposing to expand its definition of what it considers air carriers of planes and helicopters and add &#8220;powered lift&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >The agency called its move &#8220;an important step in making commercial air taxi operations a reality.&#8221;  The rules must now be publicly commented on before they can come into effect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >&#8220;This definition rule for powered lift systems lays the foundation for operators to be able to use aircraft with powered lift,&#8221; it said.  &#8220;This is important because our regulations need to cover powered aircraft so that they can operate commercially.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >The agency also said it expects to publish proposed rules for operating such aircraft in the summer of 2023.  These rules will outline in more detail the criteria companies must meet in order to license pilots and begin operations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >Most analysts in the US don&#8217;t expect air taxis to officially take off until 2024 or 2025 at the earliest, due in part to the ongoing debate over how the new machines will be regulated, which will face both local and national regulatory issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >Despite the uncertain schedule, United Airlines and Delta are among the big companies that have pledged millions of dollars to the idea in recent months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >Walter Desrosier, vice president of engineering and maintenance at the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, called the move an &#8220;absolutely essential first step&#8221; that signals the FAA&#8217;s determination to make progress on this matter. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div >\n<p >&#8220;This is very, very positive progress, but the details are still pending,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Air taxis seem a little closer to take off.
