National Grid decided not to activate a system on Tuesday to help Britain avoid blackouts after it was ready to do so. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It would have resulted in some households being offered discounts on their electricity bills if they reduced consumption during peak periods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The move followed a warning that the UK’s energy supply was looking tighter than usual this week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Alerts are sent automatically when expected supplies fall below a certain level. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But they don’t mean that power outages are likely or that the situation is critical. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

National Network said it was “confident” it would be able to manage margins and “demand is not at risk”<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Earlier on Monday, the network operator warned it was considering paying households across the UK to reduce their energy use to help on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As part of the Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) announced earlier this month, customers who have signed up could get discounts on their bills if they use less electricity in a specific time slot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That could mean delaying the use of a tumble dryer or washing machine, or cooking dinner in the microwave instead of the oven.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Big players like Octopus and British Gas are taking part, but only customers who have a smart meter and who have volunteered are eligible to take part. Around 14 million UK homes have a smart meter. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The DFS has already been tested twice, but has not yet gone live.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    National Grid said two utility alerts were issued and canceled on Monday. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    It came after forecasters called for a big drop in the amount of electricity Britain can import from France on Monday and Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The lack of strong winds to power turbines has also impacted how much electricity can be generated in the UK. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Such warnings are not uncommon – around 12 have been issued and reversed without issue in the last six years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    However, due to the energy crisis, they have become more frequent this year and the last notice was sent out last week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
