Union leaders say a solution to the industrial dispute disrupting UK rail services is nowhere near.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mick Whelan, leader of the Aslef train drivers’ union, said: “We’re further away than we started.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He gave a statement to the deputies of the Parliament’s special committee on transport, together with the leaders of the other unions representing the railway workers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Unions have staged a series of strikes since last summer that have led to widespread service cancellations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Asked by MPs how close a resolution is on a scale of one to 10, Mr Whelan said: “I think you can include zero.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On Friday, the rail companies made their first offer to the drivers, an 8% pay rise spread over two years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But Mr Whelan said he “could not recommend any element of it”, adding it could “destroy the ability to return to talks in the future”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (Aslef) represents locomotive engineers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Unions representing workers other than drivers, including the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) and the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union, are also campaigning for better wages and working conditions for their members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Frank Ward, interim general secretary of TSSA, told the committee hearing he could not disagree with Mr Whelan’s testimony.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT, the largest railway union, said the prospects for an agreement depended on discussions and “until we get an agreement we are not close”. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    He said “we’re a long way from paying,” stressing that the offers so far have been well below inflation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
