British online store Book Depository is being shut down by its parent company, US tech giant Amazon.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Book Depository has informed its customers that it will be closing its doors later this month after nearly two decades in business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It comes after Amazon announced plans to cut thousands of jobs as it shakes up its businesses worldwide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The news was met with sadness by many Book Depository customers from around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“We are sorry to report that Book Depository will close on April 26, 2023,” the company said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Customers can still order books until noon UK time on the last trading day, the company’s website added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Book Depository was founded in 2004 by former Amazon employee Andrew Crawford and his business partner Stuart Felton.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The global online bookseller, bought by Amazon in 2011, has offices in London, Gloucester, Madrid, Cape Town and Chennai – with fulfillment centers in the UK and Australia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Thousands of Book Depository customers, including bestselling authors, reacted with sadness to the announcement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Sorry to hear the news. A great loss for all of us,” tweeted New Zealand author and poet Lang Leav.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“My heart is breaking,” said another Twitter user.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This year, Amazon has shed thousands of jobs to make big cost savings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As part of the restructuring, the company announced changes to its book business, including a decision to stop selling magazines and newspaper subscriptions on its Kindle e-book device.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Last month, Chief Executive Andy Jassy said cutting jobs across the company was a “tough decision” but it was best for the company in the long run.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He said roles have been added to most of Amazon’s businesses in recent years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“However, given the uncertain economy we find ourselves in and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have decided to streamline our costs and headcount,” he continued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Like much of the global tech industry, Amazon has experienced a sales boom during the pandemic as customers have been stuck at home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Recently, however, sales have slowed as consumers spend less due to the cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n
