Japanese officials have approved controversial plans to build the country’s first gambling resort.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The complex will open in 2029 in the western city of Osaka.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Casinos have long been illegal in Japan. But in 2018, a law was passed that provides exceptions for games like poker or baccarat to create jobs and boost tourism. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Public opinion is divided, with some concerned about a rise in crime and gambling addiction. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In addition to the casino, the 5.3 million square foot (49 ha) complex will include a hotel, conference center, shopping center and museum.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“We hope that (the casino) will become a tourist base that will introduce the charm of Japan to the world,” said Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The project has an initial investment of 1.8 trillion yen (US$13.5bn, \u00a310.7bn), with US-based casino operator MGM and Japan’s Orix Group each owning 40% stakes in the company. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The other 20% is owned by local companies such as West Japan Rail, Kansai Electric Power and Osaka-based Panasonic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

According to a Japanese news service, officials expect the resort will attract around 20 million visitors annually and bring about 1 trillion yen in economic benefits to the region annually. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The project was proposed years ago but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a corruption scandal involving a ruling party lawmaker who was accused of taking bribes while in charge of casino policies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Japan is considered a promising market for gambling. With around 126 million inhabitants, it is the third largest economy in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It also has proximity to wealthy Asian players, particularly those from China. Macau is the only Chinese city where casino gambling is legal. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A similar plan was put forward by Nagasaki Prefecture to build a casino at Huis Ten Bosch, a Dutch-themed theme park. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
