Passengers have been warned to expect significant disruption from the latest train strikes on Friday.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Aslef train drivers’ union members are resigning from 16 companies, some of which no longer offer any services at all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

These include TransPennine Express, Northern, Avanti, East Midlands Railway, Thameslink and Southern.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Friday’s strike, which Aslef insists was not aimed at Eurovision events, is the first of four separate days of strikes by two unions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Aslef is on strike on Friday 12 May, Wednesday 31 May and Saturday 3 June – the day of the FA Cup Final.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Separately, the RMT union is on strike on Saturday May 13 – the day of the Eurovision final in Liverpool.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Both unions have been accused by Transport Secretary Mark Harper of targeting the competition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

National Rail said the action would “likely result in much of the network being subject to little or no service,” with service also suspended on the days immediately following the strike days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Passengers should plan ahead and learn about the services before traveling, it said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan said the timetable for strike action was based on the union’s rejection of the rail operators’ recent offer, a 14-day notice period and workers’ shift schedules, and that Eurovision had “no consideration” had been “.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“We hadn’t been looking at an event,” he told the BBC, adding that if the union had targeted the competition they would have taken action on the day of the final, on Saturday, instead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, there will then be bans on overtime for Aslef.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On Saturday, 14 operators will be affected by strikes by railway workers in the RMT.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Mr Whelan added: “We don’t want to hurt anyone, but there’s no good day for a strike. If you choose a day in a specific week, you will encounter a specific event.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    However, the Department for Transport said: “It is hard to believe that Aslef would not be aware of the huge impact that calling strikes the day before and taking no strike action on the day of the Eurovision final would have on the event.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Harry Cunningham, 23, who lives in London, had planned to take the train to Liverpool on Friday and stay overnight at the Eurovision Village grand final on Saturday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    When the strikes were announced, he and his friend considered other modes of transportation, but either alternative would have been three times longer than the train.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      He said it was “overwhelming” and “heartbreaking” that they couldn’t go.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      “It’s a big disappointment, a real disappointment and a huge missed opportunity. This is something we have been preparing and preparing for since September, maybe even before that.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      In the long-standing wage dispute at Aslef, there have already been six days of strikes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      Mr Whelan said a solution was still further away and did not rule out the dispute could drag on for years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      He said the escalation he warned of in January has not yet materialized and members are still urging “harder and faster” action.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      Industry and government say the railroad’s finances are unsustainable, so ways of working need to be changed and efficiency gains achieved in return for wage increases. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      The unions point out that the proposed wage increases are well below inflation and argue that their members’ jobs and working conditions would be attacked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      Last month, Aslef rejected the latest proposals from the group representing railway companies. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      These included:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      • a 4% salary increase for the final year, subject to acceptance of conditions such as changes to expedite training<\/li>\n
      • a 4% salary increase for this year, subject to further changes agreed locally, such as making Sunday work a contractual obligation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

        Mr Whelan says discussions at talks had led him to believe the second-year pay rise would remain negotiable depending on what changes were agreed. But when the offer came in, the figure of 4% was attached.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

        \n

        There have been no further discussions since the cancellation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

        \n

        Separately, RMT members, who work as maintenance workers and signalers at Network Rail, voted to accept a deal in March, ending the dispute.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

        \n

        But the parallel dispute over pay, jobs and working conditions with 14 railway companies continues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

        \n

        The RMT committee has rejected the rail companies’ recent offer of a pay rise of 5% one year and 4% the next.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

        \n

        Mick Lynch, their general secretary, said: “During this dispute, which has been going on for over a year, the government has tied the hands of the railway companies and prevented them from offering a fair deal.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

        “We are striking so that employers and the government realize that the great anger among railroad workers is very real and that they must recognize that fact, face reality and come up with improved proposals.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
