Americans already facing rising inflation now face record gas prices after rising on Tuesday at $ 4.17 a gallon. This is expected to cost thousands more motorists to power their vehicles.
With oil analysts predicting pump prices could stay high for months, here are some ways to save money on gasoline.
There is an app for this
You can download a mobile app, such as GasBuddy, Gas Guru, or AAA Mobile, that lists the cheapest gas stations in your area. Buying the city’s cheapest gasoline can save drivers up to 25 cents a gallon, GasBuddy said. Apps are available for Android and iOS devices.
Food and gas
Dozens of wholesale and grocery chains, including Safeway, Winn-Dixie, and BJ’s, offer gasoline discounts when you shop at their stores. At Safeway, customers get a 10-cent discount per gallon when they spend $ 100 on groceries. Kroger has a similar program that saves 10 cents a gallon at Shell gas stations. Some of these benefits require an in-store subscription.
Take care of your car
Keeping up to date with car maintenance helps fuel efficiency by reducing the number of trips to the pump. Make sure the tire pressure is correct. Change the oil and replace the air filter. Staying within the speed limit and avoiding aggressive driving also keeps gas in the tank longer.
Cash is king
For most vehicles, there is no significant difference between refueling with premium or normal unleaded gas, so opt for the cheapest quality. Many gas stations also charge less if you pay in cash (or by debit card). If you don’t have cash, fill it out at gas stations that offer you the same cash price to use your card.
Avoid driving
Take public transportation. Ride your bike. Share a car to work with someone who owns an electric vehicle. The less you drive your own car, the less you have to fill up the tank.
