Tony Dokoupil is a co-host of CBS Mornings. Previously, he was a CBS News correspondent and a contributor to CBS Sunday Morning. His reports have appeared on all CBS News broadcasts and platforms.
Since joining CBS News in 2016, Dokoupil has interviewed a variety of artists, animators, and news executives, including First Lady Hillary Clinton, comedy legend Steve Martin, and music superstar Dolly Parton. and Linda Ronstadt.
Dokoupil has done many high-profile fieldwork while co-hosting CBS. He has coordinated CBS’s morning broadcast from various news sites across the country, including Capitol Hill following the January 6 assault on the Capitol, in the midst of Hurricanes Laura and Dorian, from various battlefield states. during the 2020 presidential election as part of its “At America’s Crossroads” series, at the Kennedy Space Center to cover the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and inside the Empire State Building, with a preview of the renovated observation deck on the 102nd floor.
Dokoupil has led the original vaping coverage, including an exclusive interview with Juul CEO Kevin Burns. He also led an investigation into the Robinhood trade and investment application and the death of teenager Austin Kearns, including an exclusive interview with Kearns’ parents. In addition, Dokoupil presents the original “The Price You Pay” series, which discusses why costs are rising for many common products or services.
His cover stories for “CBS Sunday Morning” include features about the scourge of suicide, the struggles of public school teachers, and a successful rehabilitation program for drug and alcohol-addicted airline pilots. His long work for Sunday Morning includes profiles of Chuck Lorre and Ben Stiller, and cultural pieces about the joys of quitting work, the benefits of working with your hands, and the struggle for plastic straws.
Earlier, as a CBS News correspondent, he has written on marijuana legalization, digital privacy, and the Second Amendment. In addition, Dokoupil had served as a substitute presenter for CBS News Streaming and CBS Weekend News.
Dokoupil joined CBS News after three years on NBC News, where he most recently was an MSNBC correspondent. He was the network’s lead reporter on a number of major national stories, such as the Paris climate deal and the Flint water crisis. He also covered the 2016 presidential primary.
From 2007 to 2013, Dokoupil was the lead writer of Newsweek and the Daily Beast. where his reports took him to NBC’s “Today,” ABC’s “20/20,” and NPR’s “Fresh Air with Terry Gross.”
Dokoupil is also the author of the critically acclaimed book, “The Last Pirate: A Father, His Son and the Golden Age of Marijuana” (Doubleday, 2014), a memoir in which he documented his father’s exploits with smuggling. marijuana during the 1970s and 1980s.
Dokoupil earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from George Washington University and a master’s degree in American Studies from Columbia University.
He has four children and lives in New York with his family.
