Bangladeshi sprinter Imranur Rahman made history for the country by qualifying for the 60m sprint of the World Athletics Indoor Championship in Belgrade on Saturday.
England-based sprinter Imranur, who recently became Bangladesh’s fastest man after winning the 100m sprint in national athletics in his first appearance, climbed 6.64 seconds in his favorite event 60m sprint to reach the semi-finals.
The best sprinters in the world are fighting for the titles in the World Athletics Indoor Championship. Imranur finished third in his heat, finishing first at the Olympic Games in Tokyo over 100m sprint winner Marcel Jacobs from Italy (6.53 seconds).
This is the first time that a Bangladeshi athlete participates in the World Athletics Indoor Championship. No other sprinter from the South Asian region has made it to the semifinals of this edition.
Pakistani Umar Khaiyam Hameed was disqualified in the heat, while South Asia’s fastest man, Hassan Saaid of the Maldives, failed to qualify after taking 6.87 seconds.
Imranur qualified as the 18th fastest, with 20 athletes qualifying for the semifinals to be held later in the day.
