Sydney FC’s resurgent season, Macarthur Bulls’ defensive problems continue

Weeks after their season ended in a nosedive, Sydney FC fought back to the finals with a dominant 3-0 victory over the high-flying Western United on Saturday night, whose grip on the top was slightly loosened.

United slipped to second on the ladder after heavy losses as Melbourne City jumped them to a 1-1 draw with the Melbourne win in Saturday night’s derby. A Curtis Good header at half-time struck Marco Rojas’ opener for the victory, which puts the city at the top, even though United have two games in hand.

United suffered their worst loss of the season at the hands of Sydney FC, who revived their touch of class in a vintage performance at Kogarah. Milos Ninkovic scored one of the most impressive goals of his A-League career, while Dutch international Luciano Narsingh stepped out of the mark before Mustafa Amini sealed all three points.

It looked like nothing more than a big win for the Sky Blues in the opening minute, as Western Aleksandar Prijovic found the back of the net after catching a foul by James Donachie of Sydney, only for an understandable lineman for those most marginal breaches of the offside line.

From there, Sydney found their momentum and Ninkovic showed his full class to give the Sky Blues the lead in the middle of the first half. The Serbian veteran fired a spectacular volley to break the deadlock, leaving Western goalkeeper Jamie Young helpless as he flew the ball into the net, from the post.

Narsingh doubled Sydney’s lead with a superb strike at half-time, chipping Young from close range before Amini’s victory in ’69. Socceroo midfielder dismissed United’s Jerry Skotadis on the edge of the area passed Young to score his first goal in a Sydney jersey.

Meanwhile, Macarthur FC’s defensive crisis shows no signs of stopping after the Bulls returned to a 4-2 defeat on Saturday with Central Coast Mariners at Mudgee.

Even though they still remain in the top six, Campbelltown Club has scored 11 goals in the last four games to now offer the worst defensive record in the competition with 30 conceded goals.
