The first man in space, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was fired in honor of the Space Foundation, which censored his name “in light of current world events”.
The organization, which holds its annual Space Symposium conference in Colorado Springs, sees the presence of top-level representatives from the international space community, including 160 space companies, 100 speakers, and thousands of participants.
In a now deleted note, marked by Futurismtold the Space Foundation that it would delete Yuri Gagarin’s name from his annual “Yuri’s Night” and replace it with “A Celebration of Space: Discover What’s Next” at the conference.
“The focus of this fundraising event remains the same – to celebrate human achievements in space, while inspiring the next generation to reach the stars,” the deleted note said.
The move was made in solidarity with the Ukrainian people in the context of Russia’s “special military operation” in the country, and perhaps a “need to do something”, as several other organizations and companies have done in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the International Cat Federation banned Russian cats from participating in their international competitions, calling the attack on Ukraine an “unknown act of aggression”.
It is worth noting that Ukraine, like Russia, was part of the USSR, which represented Gagarin. In fact, the Ukrainian Chernihiv Stadium was renamed the Yuri Gagarin Stadium by the Soviets and continues to be referred to as such.
“It is a rather dubious show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people, especially considering that Gagarin worked for the USSR, a very different country than today Russia. And the ice cream on the cake? Ukraine actually seems quite fond of of Gagarin and his monumental performance, ”he noted Futurism.
“Deleting the name of the first person to ever fly into space while celebrating ‘human achievements in space’ is bad enough,” the space and technology publication continued. “But to do so in line with the Milquetoast trend to abandon all Russians, including famous composers and food products, in the context of the country’s current invasion of Ukraine is just scandalous.”
America and Russia’s intense rivalry on Earth and in space has led to tremendous advances in technology for both countries, and at a time when the two countries were not at extreme political opportunity, international unity brought cooperation aboard the International Space Station. .
Censoring the name of the Russian cosmonaut and removing him from the books will in no way help further cooperation between the two countries, nor bring peace or do any favors to the Ukrainians.
