Santino Ferrucci will return to the number 45 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda to replace Jack Harvey, who failed the cognitive test of the NTT IndyCar series after his hard impact on the wall during Saturday’s last training session.
Ferrucci, who drove the No.45 for RLL in five laps last year, was at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, making his availability a fortune to pull the team.
“Just glad Jack is OK,” Ferrucci told RACER. “Lucky I’m here, and just representing Hy-Vee and trying to have a good day for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.”
The RLL team was forced to build a new chassis to replace the Dallara DW12 which was destroyed in the impact. IndyCar allowed the team to stay until 12:30 a.m. to get to the construction site, and the team was working hard on their return to complete the process.
IndyCar also gave the team a special dispensation for Ferrucci to spin laps in the car at 10:15 a.m. – about 90 minutes before the green flag – to get up to speed and ensure the new chassis has no problems before the green Flag.
“Per IndyCar protocol, all drivers carry accelerometers that measure g-forces emitted during an incident,” the series released in a statement.
“These are fully evaluated after each incident, and if the result of the g-forces exceeds the minimum threshold, drivers must be re-evaluated before they can return to competition.
