Will Butler has announced that he will be leaving Arcade Fire after two decades in the band.

The band was formed by multi-instrumentalist Butler’s brother Win in Montreal in the early 2000s, with Butler joining in 2004 for their debut album ‘Funeral’. The band returns this week with news from their sixth album, ‘WE’, in a video for the first single ‘The Lightning I, II’, in which Butler did not appear.
In a new series of tweets posted tonight (March 19), Butler revealed that he left the band at the end of last year, saying it was “time for new things” and that the Band remains his “friends and family”.

In a series of follow-up tweets, Butler revealed that he has embarked on a new solo album, which will follow, among other things, the ‘Generations’ of 2020.

‘WE’, Arcade Fire’s sixth studio album, will be released on Columbia Records on May 6 and has been produced by longtime Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich along with Win Butler and Régine Chassagne of the band.
