MORGANTOWN, W. VA. – The West Virginia University Track and Field Team opened the 2022 Outdoor Regular Season by hosting the annual Stan Romanoski Open on March 18-19 at the Track and Field Complex in Mylan Park.
The Mountaineers earned five spots in first place on Saturday. In discus throwing competition, senior Sada Wright recorded a distance of 48.54 meters, which is good for a program second best, behind Jodi Smith’s 50.26 meter set in 1984. She was followed by Redshirt Senior Ellie Gardner, which was first entered in the Pole Vault competition. Gardner finished with a height of 3.56 meters.
“Sada did a very good job today,” said the coach Sean Cleary. “Sada’s long shot earns her a second all-time in the discus. We know Sada goes much further than the season, but we’re excited about today.
Ellie was strong in the vault at noon in windy conditions. Navigating the vault outdoors on a day like today is not easy. It’s nice to see her off to a good start to the season.
On the track, senior Tessa Konstantin deserves some first places. Konstantin finished the 400 meters in a time of 57.38 and she finished the 200 meters in a time of 26.32. Redshirt senior Hayley Jackson Place in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4: 35.44.
“Tess looked strong today with the 400 meters,” Cleary said. “We think she’s running more than two seconds faster than the season, which prepares her very well for the hurdles.
Hayley tore down the cobwebs with a steady victory at 1500 meters. Today was a great icebreaker for her as we prepare for the big meet next month.
In addition, Sophomore Emily Oiler Place second on the 400-meter, while second Megan Weaver 800 meter run in fourth place.
Up next on the track, Redshirt Junior Malina Mitchell Place fifth in the 1,500 meters, and freshman Ghamani Houge Place 5 on the 100 meters.
To finish the contest, Junior Katelyn Caccamo Second place in the pole, and freshman Eden Williams Place in the high jump competition third.
The Stan Romanoski Open marks the first of five outdoor home meetings for mountaineers this spring.
The annual meeting place is named in honor of the former men’s cross-country and track and field coach of 1958-80. After piloting the programs for nearly 25 years, Romanoski set a 109-81 cross country record along with a 70-39-1 track and field record.
“It was a good start to the outdoor season,” Cleary said. “Conditions were as good as one would expect for a competition in mid-March. Running in front of family and friends is always pleasant.”
West Virginia will continue to perform at the Raleigh Relay in Raleigh, North Carolina, 24-26. March at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility.
