A series that is immersed in the history of U2 is in early development, and should be released on Netflix in the coming years.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that JJ Abrams (Lost, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Fringe) is the executive producer of the new series, thanks to his production company Bad Robot.
Oscar-nominated writer Anthony McCarten was chosen to write the script, following the hugely successful Bohemian Rhapsody, a biographical drama that tells the story of the Queen’s rise.
It is still unknown if the show will be done with or without U2, but it is expected that they will oversee the project to some extent.
The series could be released in time for 2026, the 50th anniversary of the band’s founding in 1976.
While the band has previously written songs for film and television, this will be the first fictional account of their history.
The closest thing to a dramatic narrative of the band’s origins is in the book-shooting film Killing Bono, which watched U2’s rise from the perspective of one of Bono’s classmates.
There have also been a few documentaries and concert films made about the band, most notably 1988’s Rattle and Hum.
Bono recently released a new song dedicated to Charlie Bird ahead of his Climb With Charlie campaign.
‘This is an extraordinary gesture. “I am overjoyed and could not believe the message I received from Bono,” the veteran broadcaster said in a statement.
“He is hugely supported by the Climb With Charlie campaign, which aims to raise funds for two amazing charities, the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta.”
