In a video released Sunday night, Puerto Rican reggaeton icon Daddy Yankee announced he was retiring from music. To end his three-decade-long career, he shared that he was releasing a recent album by name Legendaddy and planning one last tour.
The father of Yankee, whose real name is Ramón Ayala, posted the video on his official website, where he also shared a link to preview the album’s top and outline his future La Ultima Vuelta tour. The US leg begins on August 10 in Portland, Oregon and ends in New York on September 20. The musician will then move through Latin America, stopping in Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and more.
In his video, he addresses his fans directly in Spanish. “This career was a marathon,” Ayala said. “I finally see the end result. Now I will enjoy with you all what you have given me. People say I made this genre global, but it is you who gave me the key to open the doors and to make this genre the greatest in the world. He also talked about his influence on young generations. “In the barrios where we grew up, most of us wanted to be drug dealers. Today I go to Barrios caserios, and the majority want to be artists, and that means a lot to me.
Ayala described his debut album as his “best production”. He said he would celebrate his 32 years as an artist with “all the styles that defined me on an album”. Legendaddy will be his first studio album in 10 years.
Ayala started making music in the mid 90’s. He broke through with his 2004 album Barrio Fino, which included the hit “Gasolina” – voted as one of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time – which brought reggaeton to the mainstream audience worldwide.
