MBTA’s Green Line Expands on Somerville – Boston 25 News

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the first time in 63 years, the Green Line is being expanded. On Monday morning, the first trains left the brand new Union Square station in Somerville.

A newly built Lechmere station has been opened for pilots in Cambridge.

The station’s opening on Monday marks the first phase of the extension of the green line, which has been underway since 1990. After years of delays and setbacks, the project finally came to fruition, costing over $ 2 billion. In the second phase of the project, which is expected to open sometime later this year, there will be five new stations along the extension, which expands in MedfoOfficialsials, saying the green line extension supports more than 50,000 passenger journeys per day.

“This will give access to the residents of these communities, this will give them access to the subway systems in Boston,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “Right now you can get a ride from Union Square to Heath Street. Really exciting. Really excited to open this up for this community.

For about two years the station Lechmer has been closed to build a new one, which is now across the street. But that is not the only change that will come this morning for the riders. They must also validate their rate.

MBTA posted this tutorial video on Twitter. Before arriving at the new Lechmere and Union Square stations, riders must validate their fare. They can type their Charlie card into a vending machine, select validation, pick up their Charlie card once more and then pick up the receipt and keep it for your trip.

“The fare system works a little differently with these stations,” Poftak said. “You can either enter at the fare machine when you enter the station or you can tap at the fare box when you board, so there are two options for our riders. You will receive a paper receipt at the fare machine which you will receive as proof of the Payment can be shown if needed.

The MBTA says students must also validate their rates. There will be staff on hand when riders need help.
