CD Project has confirmed that they have started working on a new The Witcher game but so far they have made a point of not calling it The Witcher 4.
Announced via Twitter and an update to the official website, it is not called The Witcher 4 and is so far only referred to as The Witcher: A New Saga Begins. Besides the key art of a wolf mask in the snow, the only other thing CD Project shared was that it was made in Unreal Engine 5.
This basically confirms that it will be a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S exclusive game, plus PC, with CD Project adding that this is part of a multi-year partnership with Epic Games. As for the CD project’s own REDengine, it will continue to be used for Cyberpunk 2077.
While there is general enthusiasm for the project, there is of course also some fear, and rightly so. Considering Cyberpunk 2077’s now famous development cycle and release, hopefully CD Project will actively avoid repeating the same mistakes.
No release date or development time frame has been specified, which is ideally a sign that CD project is taking the time it needs and not trying to meet a specific deadline.
Due to the subtitle and lack of numbers, it is also possible that this new game does not center around the series protagonist Geralt. There was demand for his adopted daughter Ciri to take the middle seat and CD Project had the opportunity before.
It even said that the next Witcher would not be The Witcher 4, which was assumed to be a spin-off. Although at the moment everything is open for interpretation.
