Moneyline Analysis
The Edmonton Oilers picked it up again and started finding their game after a few midseason fights. The Oilers have won their last five straight games – all at home – and have done so convincingly. Their insult leads the charge as they have scored 28 goals in that five game span.
Despite sitting out her last game, Darcy Kuemper was the story of Avs’ three-game winning streak. He started in the first two of those three games and made back-to-back shootouts. In his last three starts, Kuemper has conceded just one goal on a total of 105 shots he is facing. This was his best track of the season and he will be very well equipped for today’s competition. As the primary netminder of the Avs, Kuemper led the way with a record of 29-8-2 plus a .923 saving percentage and a 20.3 GSAx (sixth in the NHL). He will be tested tonight, against the seventh best offensive team with two of the league’s biggest superstars including Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Where the goalkeeper was an additional strength for the AVs, it was the main weakness of the Oilers. Even though they are on an impressive win, it is mainly because of their offensive production. Mike Smith is the expected starter tonight. The veteran is 6-8-1 on the season with a .895 save percentage and a -5.1 GSAx backup satellite Mikko Koskinen. Smith played excellently in his last start, which came on Thursday against the Buffalo Sabers, where he stopped 27 of 28 shots and helped the Oilers to a 6-1 victory. Stopping the Colorado attack is a very different story.
Whether the Oilers start Smith or if they decide to go with Koskinen at the last second, the Avs have the edge in goal. And even though the Oilers have the two top scorers in the league, it can be argued that the AVs also have the offensive edge. Colorado is the league’s second-best team in terms of offensive production, averaging 3.84 goals per game with one of the best power-play units, with 24.4% of their chances with the man advantage. Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar both come from three point games. MacKinnon collected three assists and Makar scored a goal with a pair of assistants in their 5-3 victory against the Sharks.
I learned my lesson never to bet against the Avs in the Ball Arena because they are 24-3-3 at home. I go with the home favorites.

Over / Under Analysis
This matchup is between two of the best offensive superpowers in the league. There are six guys that stand out right away, with obviously McDavid and Draisaitl for the Oilers, but I’m very excited to see MacKinnon, Nazem Kadri, and Mikko Rantanen stand out against Edmonton’s top guys. Anyway, I’m most excited to see Makar vs. McDavid. Many people referred to Makar as “McDavid of the Defender”, and they did not play many games against each other. Makar is second between defenders and points this season with 22 goals and 47 assists in 58 games.
The four games listed for Colorado each have more than 60 points and are, on average, more than one point per game. McDavid and Draisaitl are the only Oilers with north of 60 points, as McDavid is first in the league with 90 and Draisaitl is second with 86. As a team, they are the seventh-highest producing offense, averaging 3.37 gpg and leading the league fourth. -best PP unit, with a 25.3% rate. The oilers are a very difficult team to contain and slow down, especially with their speed of rush. They have the puck so well in the offensive zone, which is a big reason why they generate 12.71 high danger chances per 60 minutes. Colorado is by no means a bad defensive team, but as they say, “the best defense is a good offensive.”
Like Edmonton, Colorado’s offense can easily take over this game. MacKinnon and the Rantans have all scored two goals and four assists in the last three games and they continue to be the driving force behind this offense.
All signs point to the goal scorer this evening. This should be a shooting gallery and also a fun one.

Best bet
This will be an incredible game to watch with all the talents on both sides.
Kuemper’s shutout streak is a small cause for concern, but neither of his recent opponents has been as talented before as the Oilers, so he is being tested. Edmonton’s goalie was completely inconsistent this season and Colorado is so good on home ice that I expect the AVs to pepper completely, no matter which goalie gets the corner for the Oilers.
Both teams are offensive jugglers who can score at will and the over was a consistent trend whenever these two teams meet. I expect to see a ton of highlight-reel goals and games between the Oilers and Avs.
