Spain’s energy security is in jeopardy after Algeria, its largest gas supplier, reminded its ambassador of a decision by Morocco’s autonomy plan to support Western Sahara, the former Spanish colony.

Algeria has hosted leaders and supporters of the Polisario Front independence movement since Morocco annexed Western Sahara in 1975 following the death of General Franco.
Spain has so far maintained a neutral position in the decades-old conflict. Algeria has condemned the “abrupt transformation” of Madrid.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares praised Morocco’s proposal in 2007 to grant Western Sahara limited autonomy.
