Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet access service has a franchise average of 100 Mbps and downloads in five of its main markets… from France.
Internet access via Starlink satellite is a serious option to consider for all those who do not have the chance to have a good connection with them. Uncovered areas, such as 4G, are more frequent than the area, especially in the mountains and in rural areas.
A medium that passes the terrestrial flow
Elon Musk, the originator of this initiative, promised download speeds include between 50 and 250 Mbps, and latency between 20 and 40 ms. According to Ookla’s speed tests carried out in the fourth quarter of 2021, these promises are globally in five countries, including the United States, Germany, Belgium … and France, where the service was launched commercially in May last.
The study also indicates that Starlink averaged 121,21 Mbps download speed: a more important third-quarter speed (102,15 Mbps), and also higher than the average Internet access classic that reached 90.88 Mbps at the end of last year. The latency, on the other hand, is higher at Starlink (51 ms) than at the “terrestrial” FAI (12 ms), while the upload is still largely perfect: 17.30 Mbps versus 69.49 Mbps.
Starlink does much better than its competitor SES, which has a ceiling of 14.88 Mbps and Download, 1.83 Mbps and upload and 649 ms of ping. Ookla concludes that the SpaceX offer is a great option for customers living in the poorly covered areas. These results will improve in all respects the first tests carried out in August 2020.
And the download speed goes up a lot faster thanks to the new premium formula, which offers speeds up to 500 Mbps! But pay attention to the invoice, this costs a lot more: $ 2,500 for the equipment (satellite and modem) and $ 500 per month of subscription, against € 499 for the equipment and € 99 per month for the standard formula.
