Steve Smith made this series against Pakistan for the third time in half a century without further scoring a three-digit score as Australia recovered from an early wobble in the third Test.

‘I’ve never seen that before’: funny blow-up proves that Steve Smith is not human

Steve Smith made 59 of a nasty 169-ball innings, but was caught off guard by Naseem Shah shortly after tea with a quick reverse delivery that slammed into his right hand.

No. 4 was angry with replays showing that he hit his back pad with his bat during his shot, which stopped him from reaching the ball before hitting him.

Smith has now failed to convert seven straight half-centuries, while his last Test tone remains his 131 against India in January 2021.

Khawaja also failed to turn his fifty into a century, and in the 90s released this series for the second time as he made 91.

The opener tried to fly Sajid Khan through the midwicket, but an outside edge found Babar Azam in the slides and he produced an exceptionally low catch with one hand.

“This is a blender, an absolute blinder,” Mike Haysman said in a comment.

Khawaja’s test average since the age of 35 has risen to 107.83 – the best of anyone in the game’s history (minimum two tests). Next on that list is Sir Donald Bradman with 105.72.

Pakistan’s strong last session continued with the ball with Naseem Shah finding Travis Head’s outside edge for 26.

Pakistan had two golden opportunities to break the partnership between Khawaja and Smith in the 17th, as Nauman Ali produced two chances in his first surplus. The first Khawaja was crossed by Babar Azam’s legs and slipped first, while Smith lowered the floor and hit Ali hard back, which missed the sharp chance of his own bowling.

Mark Waugh felt that both chances were missed, especially the first by Babar.

“He’s nowhere to be found … he’s too tall,” Waugh told Fox Cricket. “You have to start low, he was too high up. It’s impossible to go down when you’re too high … it was catchy.

Haddin added: “You have to take these chances, especially when the series is 0-0.

From Ali’s list, Waugh said that spinners should always be ready for a return catch as there is a common mode of redemption against spin bowling.

Haddin agreed and said, “I know it’s a hard catch, but you have to keep it.”

Meanwhile, Haddin praised Smith for his positive start, saying it was the “best he has” this series.

“He changed his mind to be more aggressive,” he said. “For me, he looked to score and not just survive and that’s where he did his best.”

Australia were in trouble early on after losing David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne to Shaheen Shah Afridi in the first three overs.

Unlike the first two tests, there was some grass on the wicket that Afridi used early on. Even if the wicket is still expected to fit the batsmen outside of some disturbing early overs.

Warner was caught for seven on his button by a ball that bounced back while Labuschagne was driving and canceled a full delivery that went off to come out for a second ball duck.

It is his second innings in three innings, while Labuschagne’s test average since the start of the Boxing Day test is now 26.77.

Warner is experiencing his own problems – he is now 39 straight innings in international cricket without a century.

Australia rolled the dice and appointed an unchanged team, as both sides look to finally take 20 wickets in a game for the first time in the series.

Brad Haddin told Fox Cricket before the game that he would have been more “aggressive” at the selection table and chose all-rounder Ashton Agar over Travis Head.

“I’m surprised,” he said of the Australian XI, suggesting that agar should be chosen.

“Runs were no problem and the wickets were at a price so that’s the only thing that would have given us options. You would then have moved Alex Carey to the order and Ashton Agar is ready to go.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has made a change with Naseem Shah returning to the XI for Faheem Ashraf.

Previously, there had been debate over whether Josh Hazlewood would regain his place in the Australian lineup, but interim coach Andrew McDonald has opted to stick with the two-spinner approach to the final Test of the series.

This series showed that any movement at that time could be praised as a masterpiece, only to have the narrative change completely in an instant.

The notable example was the Australian skipper Pat Cummins, who chose to declare when he did in the second Test, with many thinking he had declared too late.

But after beating Pakistan for the low total of 148 in the first innings, it looked like the Cummins got their tactics in place.

He then chose not to push through the follow-up and let his top batters get a boost, only Pakistan to fight courageously in their second innings and finish 7-443 to secure a draw.
