The Virginia softball team jumped on an early lead and never looked back on the road to an 8-1 victory over NC State on Sunday in Raleigh, NC

The Cavaliers used a pair of home runs and a five-run third inning to claim their victory over the Wolfpack and earn their first series over an ACC opponent since the 2019 season.

With the win, Virginia improved to 18-11 overall and 5-1 at the ACC, its best start to conference play since the 2010 season, when the Cavaliers started the ACC Slate 6-0.

“What a great Team Weekend,” said Virginia Coach Joanna Hardin. “I felt like our team came out today with a hunger to end the series with a win.”

Virginia jumped into the lead for the second straight day, with a two-run shot from Tori Gilbert in first place to get on board. The Cavaliers then added five more runs in the third, a two-RBI double by Arizona Ritchie and a three-run home run by Sarah Coon.

NC State got a solo home run in the fourth that broke a no-hitter for UVa starter Aly Rayle, but Virginia ran the run back in the sixth inning as Abby Weaver delivered an RBI single to Gilbert, who had a Pitch was hit. .

Virginia goes back into action Tuesday night when it takes on Liberty at 7pm in Palmer Park.

“We will enjoy this on the way back home, rest and work again on Monday,” Hardin said. “I love this team and that I go back to working with them [Monday] as we prepare to host Liberty on Tuesday.

The No. 11 Virginia men’s tennis team ended their weekend with a 4-0 victory over Clemson on Sunday at the Duckworth Family Tennis Center in Clemson, SC. The Cavaliers (12-5, 6-0 ACC) won the double and opted for victories on individual courts three to five to achieve victory.

Virginia opened the match with 6-2 wins on double courts two and three to win the double. UVa led 5-2 at the top court when it was abandoned.

In singles, Bar Botzer is back in line-up with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory over Spencer Whitaker on Court 3 to give UVa a 2-0 lead. Gianni Ross then won with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at court five, then Ryan Goetz won the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at court four.

The No. 11 Virginia tennis women’s team suffered a 6-1 defeat against No. 10 Miami on a blue Sunday at the Virginia Tennis Facility at Boar’s Head Resort. Sara Ziodato scored the only point for the Cavaliers (11-4, 3-3 ACC) as she won a three-set victory on court 6.

Emma Navarro and Hibah Shaikh opened the match with a 6-2 double victory against number 16 Eden Richardson and Daevenia Achong at the top court, but the Hurricanes (11-2, 6-1 ACC) won 6- 0 and 6-2 on courts two and three to reach the double.

Richardson won Clinching Point for the Hurricanes with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Navarro at the top court. It was Navarro’s second loss in the collegiate singles game and their first since losing to Miami Estrela Perez-Somarriba on April 4, 2021 in Miami. Navarro had won 22 consecutive singlecharts match dates back to last season. She has a career record of 36-2 in singles.
