An iconic Andy Warhol silk portrait of Hollywood starlet Marilyn Monroe is on sale at Christie’s in New York later this spring for $ 200 million – a record asking price for any artwork on auction.
The 3-foot square silk screen from 1964 shows a promotional photo from the actress’ movie “Niagara”. The artist transformed the actress into a pop-art icon by giving her a bubblegum-pink face, ruby lips and blue eye shadow against a sage-blue background. The work is part of a signature series of “Shot Marilyn” portraits that became famous after a gun-toting visitor allegedly shot a shot and a stack of canvases in the artist’s studio in 1964.
