Netflix is releasing a new Jimmy Savile documentary next month – you can watch the trailer here:
Jimmy Savile: A British horror story will use “extensive archival material” to keep an eye on the late pedophile and how he managed to stay undiscovered for so long.
A synopsis for the new documentary reads: “TV star Jimmy Savile has charmed a nation with his eccentricity and philanthropy.
“Jimmy Savile was one of the most popular television personalities in Britain. Shortly after his death in 2011, an investigation led to more than 450 horrific allegations of sexual assault and abuse, with victims as young as five.
“The documentary examines, through extensive archival material, the evil in Jimmy and deepens how he managed to fool an entire nation for four decades.”
Savile had a hugely successful television career and was even awarded an OBE by the Queen.
But after his death in 2011, ITV made a documentary with shocking allegations of sexual abuse over the TV personality.
After it was broadcast, many more people came forward to report abuse, which they also suffered at the hands of the deteriorating television presenter.
Following the indictment, investigations were launched into both the BBC and the NHS, and Metropolitan Police launched the Yewtree operation, which investigated historical sexual abuse allegations against Savile and other celebrities.
Savile was also the center of two Louis Theroux documentaries – 2000s When Louis meets … Jimmy Savile and then a follow up in 2016 title Louis Theroux: Savile .
Writing for the BBC back in 2016, Theroux stated that he wanted to watch the dark side of Savile during the first documentary, but did not do so.
He wrote: “Back then I did my best to be tough with him. I knew he was weird and, in all his ways, quite annoying – I had no interest in doing a soft piece about Jimmy the Charity Fundraiser.
“The dark rumors – of sexual immorality, of being unemotional, of a morbid interest in corpses – were one of the reasons I accepted him as a subject.
“I wanted to get the goods to Savile. The problem was, I had no clear sense of what those goods were.”
Jimmy Savile: A British horror story Land on Netflix on April 6th.
