Boris Johnson is “best suited to lead this country now,” his former health secretary has said, despite a police probe into whether government events breach Covid rules.
Matt Hancock has said he would support the Prime Minister even if he were given a firm penalty for attending Downing Street parties during lockdown.
Mr Johnson received one of 100 questionnaires sent out by police at 12 events at government buildings in 2020 and 2021. Police are expected to impose 20 fines but have not yet named the recipients of the 10 lockdown parties
