Russia threatens to stop supplying gas if not paid in roubles

Russia has told foreign countries it must start paying for its gas in rubles or it will stop supplies.

Vladimir Putin has signed a decree requiring buyers to “open ruble accounts in Russian banks” from Friday.

“Nobody sells us anything for free, and we will not do charity either – that is, existing contracts will be stopped,” said the Russian president.

Putin’s call for ruble payments is an attempt to revive the currency, which has been badly hit by Western sanctions.
