Inquiry after leak of information involving Queen

An inquiry is underway after the Welsh Government accidentally leaked official correspondence detailing how the Queen died.

The correspondence and a safety leaflet marked “Officially Sensitive” were emailed to a member of the public.

The leak included a letter from a senior UK official expressing concern that a news website had leaked confidential details.

The Welsh Government said no operational information was disclosed.

But it added that the pamphlet should not have been shared.

A spokesman for the Welsh Government’s most senior official, Dr. Andrew Goodall said they take the “information and data security issue very seriously” and the incident is being investigated as a “potential security breach”.

In emails seen by BBC Wales, a senior UK government official wrote to other officials in September 2021, expressing concern that a news website had released new details about how it was handling the Queen’s death.

The official said the news report was based on internal documents not intended for publication.

In response, another senior official asked for “tailor-made guidance” on safety to be drawn up and circulated within UK governments.

These safety alerts were flagged as ‘officially sensitive’ and were mistakenly emailed to a member of the public by a Welsh government official.

In his full statement, the Welsh Government’s Secretary of State, Dr. Goodall: “Although the email contained no operational information, it was marked as ‘officially sensitive’ and should not have been shared.

“We take the issue of information and data security very seriously and this is now being investigated as a potential security vulnerability.

“We cannot comment further.”
