Chris Mason has been appointed as the BBC’s new political editor, the company announced.
The Yorkshire-born broadcaster, 41, has been a BBC journalist for two decades and currently hosts Radio 4’s Any Questions? Program.
Mason replaces Laura Kuenssberg, who resigned earlier this year.
“What an enormous privilege to take what I consider to be the most extraordinary job in British broadcasting and journalism,” said Mason.
“I climb onto the shoulders of giants like Laura, Nick and Andrew with a touch of trepidation and a lot of excitement and enthusiasm.”
“Leading the best team of journalists in the business on the best news patch ever is something I never dreamed of. I can’t wait to get started.”

Mason’s appointment comes at a time when the BBC continues to make efforts to recruit and promote people with a regional voice and offer more perspectives outside of London.
He was one of the original presenters of Newscast (formerly known as Brexitcast) and previously worked in the BBC’s Westminster regional office and as a political reporter for BBC Radio 5 Live.
Mason became the company’s political correspondent in 2012 and occasionally appears as a presenter at BBC breakfasts.
He will take up his new post in May after the UK local elections and will remain at the helm. Any questions? until summer.
Kuenssberg will take over BBC One’s Sunday morning politics show in September, previously hosted by Andrew Marr.
