The Government will seek to delay a decision on an inquiry into whether Boris Johnson misled MPs about lockdown parties.
MPs were due to vote Thursday on a Labor plan for a Commons committee to examine its past comments on meetings in Whitehall.
But ministers now say the vote should wait until investigations by the Met Police and Officer Sue Gray are completed.
Some rebellious Tory MPs threatened to vote with Labor or not at all.
Along with his wife Carrie and Chancellor Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister was fined last week for breaking Covid laws at a June 2020 birthday celebration for him in No10.
He had previously told MPs no Covid laws were being broken at Downing Street – leading opposition parties accused him of misleading Parliament.

Under Labor’s plan, the seven-member Commons Privileges Committee would have opened an inquiry into the matter.
But the government has tabled its own proposal, saying a vote on whether they should investigate should wait until police have completed their inquiries and Ms Gray has released her report.
Conservative MPs are being urged to vote for it – meaning it has a high probability of passing given the government’s lower house majority.
