Netflix cancels Meghan Markle animated series ‘Pearl’

Netflix has halted development of Pearl, an animated series created by Meghan Markle, the latest in a series of cost-cutting measures.

Announced last year, the show is one of several projects the streaming giant has shelved.

Last month Netflix announced a sharp drop in subscribers and warned millions more that they would be leaving the service.

That wiped out the company’s market value by over $50 billion, as experts warned it was struggling to get back on track.

Archewell Productions, the company founded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced last year that it would executive produce Pearl.

The series was to focus on the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who draws inspiration from influential women in history.

However, Netflix confirmed that it will continue to work on a number of projects with Archewell Productions, including the previously announced Heart of Invictus documentary series.

The series focuses on athletes competing in the 2022 Invictus Games for Injured Veterans in The Hague.

Archewell Productions did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.

Netflix also said it has decided not to proceed with two children’s animated series, Dino Daycare and Boons and Curses.

In April, Netflix announced that its total subscriber count fell by 200,000 in the first three months of this year, falling well short of its target.

It also warned that about two million more users were likely to exit the service in the three months to July.

Some analysts warned that after a period of very strong expansion during the pandemic, the company has run out of easy ways to grow the business.

Crowded consumers are slashing streaming services to save money, while some say there’s too much content to choose from amid an avalanche of competition from rivals like Disney and Amazon.
