McColl’s convenience store chain on brink of collapse

Convenience store chain McColl’s is on the brink of collapse, potentially putting thousands of jobs at risk.

The retailer said it was “increasingly likely” that it would fall into administration if talks for near-term financing were unsuccessful.

Thursday’s statement came after Sky News reported the company could call administrators on Friday.

More than 16,000 people work at McColl’s, which also has a partnership with supermarket Morrisons.

The company wrote that without additional cash, the group would likely “be placed in administration with a view to effecting a sale of the group to a third-party buyer and safeguarding the interests of creditors and employees.”

The chain also emphasized that the talks are still ongoing.
