Ford recalls almost 3 million vehicles over rollaway concern

Ford is removing nearly 3 million vehicles due to a damaged or missing part that could prevent cars from moving to the driver’s intended gear. This could cause the vehicle to move away or move in an “unexpected direction,” according to federal regulators.

The recall covers several Ford vehicle models:

  • Escape 2013-2019
  • 2013-2018 C-Max
  • 2013-2016 Merger
  • Transit Connect 2013-2021
  • 2015-2018 Edge

“A damaged or missing bus can prevent the vehicle from moving in the intended direction and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a statement. “In addition, the vehicle may roll after the driver has selected the parking position. Any scenario increases the risk of an accident or injury.”

In a product recall report, Ford said it was aware of six reports alleging property damage and four reports of personal injury related to the issue of the recall.

Dealers will replace the cap and add a protective cover, free of charge, for owners of retired cars. Owners can contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332, pickup number 22S43.

Ford will send letters to owners about the withdrawal on June 27, according to the statement.
