Almost 40,000 BT workers voted to go on strike over wage disputes.
Some 30,000 Openreach engineers and 9,000 BT call center workers overwhelmingly supported industrial action, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said.
General Secretary Dave Ward said BT was now facing its first national strike since it was privatized in the 1980s.
BT said it was disappointed and will “work to keep our customers and the country connected”.
The CWU – the union of all BT Group workers – announced that the union’s 30,000 Openreach engineers voted 95.8% to go on strike, with a turnout of 74.8%.
It said BT workers, including 9,000 call center workers, voted 91.5% for a 58.2% strike turnout.
