Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than 280,000 SUVs due to fire risks and telling owners of the recalled vehicles to park them outside and away from buildings.
The recall includes more than 245,000 Hyundai Palisade and 36,000 Kia Telluride SUVs in the US with model years 2020 through 2022.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that debris and moisture can build up in vehicle harness modules after attaching an accessory trailer hitch, which are sold to dealers. Debris and moisture can cause an electrical short and can cause a fire while cars are driving or parked.
Korean automakers reported 25 fires or melting incidents in the US and Canada, but no accidents or injuries.
Owners of the recalled Hyundai SUVs can take them to a dealer, where they will inspect the wiring and remove a fuse if an interim repair is needed, according to NHTSA. Kia does not have an interim fix. Both companies say a final fix is in the works.
“When a repair is available, all owners of vehicles potentially equipped with affected trailer hitch wiring harnesses will be notified by mail with instructions to take their vehicles to a Hyundai or Kia dealer,” NHTSA said.
Additionally, dealers have stopped selling the affected SUVs until repairs are made.
The recall comes days after GM announced it would remembering hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to a problem with the seat belts in the third row.
