(CNN)Serena Williams, who is taking part in what is likely to be the last tennis tournament of her storied career, opened the singles match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Danka Kovinić in the first round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Williams will open doubles with her sister Venus on Wednesday.
It was Serena Williams’ third match since she announced she was “evolving away from tennis.”
“I’ve never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I thought of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use this word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people,” Williams said in a Vogue article published earlier this month.
“Perhaps evolution is the best word to describe what I intend to do. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis and towards other things that are important to me,” she said.
Williams meets world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the Round of 64. It will be their first career meeting.
