Sizewell C: Boris Johnson ‘confident’ nuclear plant will go ahead

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was “confident” that the Sizewell C nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast would come on stream, adding a decision was likely within a few weeks.

Speaking at Sizewell, Mr Johnson pledged to invest £700million in the plant.

The project, which is being developed by French energy company EDF, is estimated to have a total cost of around £20 billion.

The government gave the green light for the plant in July and negotiations to raise funds are ongoing.

Mr Johnson said the war in Ukraine, which has pushed up gas prices, has highlighted the need for new nuclear generation capacity in Britain.

“We need to pull out our national finger and move on with Sizewell C,” the outgoing prime minister said.

“That is why we are putting £700m into the deal, just part of the £1.7bn in government money available to develop a major nuclear project through to the final investment stage in this Parliament.

“Over the course of the next few weeks, I’m absolutely confident that it will go over the line.”
