Some Greene King brewery staff to strike over pay

Around 188 employees at Greene King brewery have voted to go on strike over pay starting next month.

Unite union said members from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, Eastwood in Nottinghamshire and Abingdon in Oxfordshire would be moving out for five days from Monday December 5.

Workers brew and distribute the company’s products, including IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale.

Greene King said he was “disappointed” that his salary offer had been turned down.

Unite said members voted to strike after Greene King offered them a 3% pay rise and a one-off payment of £650 in what it said was a significant real pay cut due to inflation.

Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham said: “The owners of Greene King are incredibly wealthy.

In a statement, Greene King said: “We are disappointed that the union has encouraged its members to reject our salary offer, as well as a range of other benefits, and to continue with this course of action.

“Our offer of raises is fair and consistent across the company, especially given the challenging general economic environment.”

The company said it has “full contingency plans in place to minimize disruption” in the run-up to Christmas.
