National Grid has ordered two coal-fired power stations to start warming up in case power to the UK is cut off due to the cold weather.
The company said it had asked power plant operator Drax to prepare two coal furnaces for use.
National Grid said that while the two power plants will not necessarily be used, “this measure should increase public confidence in Monday’s power supply.”
Colder weather in the UK and Europe will put pressure on energy supplies.
The UK receives electricity via undersea cables from European countries including France, Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Higher demand in Europe could potentially disrupt the flow of electricity to the UK and generate the need for power from coal.
National Grid said it has “these tools for additional contingencies to keep the grid running as normal and the public should continue to consume power as normal.”
