Amazon workers in Coventry announce strike date in first ever UK walkout

The first-ever strike by British workers at online giant Amazon is set to take place later this month, it has been announced.

Members of the GMB union, based at the company’s warehouse in Coventry, will leave on January 25 after voting to take industrial action.

GMB chief organizer Amanda Gearing said workers locked in a wage dispute would make history.

Amazon has previously said it offers “competitive pay” and provides workers with “comprehensive benefits.”

The union organizer said: “You have [the workers] shown that they are willing to put themselves on the line to fight for what is right,” she said.

“But people who work for one of the most valuable companies in the world shouldn’t have to threaten to go on strike just to get a living wage.”

She urged Amazon UK bosses to “give workers a decent raise and avoid industrial action”.

Hundreds of workers voted to withdraw a 50p an hour wage offer, the GMB said.
