US inflation stays high as housing costs bite

US inflation has cooled for the seventh straight month, but prices continue to rise much faster than is considered healthy.

Inflation, the rate at which prices are rising, was 6.4% in the 12 months to January, spurred by soaring jumps in housing, food and energy costs.

That was just a slight decline from December’s 6.5%.

Officials have warned that despite recent signs of improvement, it will take time for prices to stabilise.
