Heathrow Airport has been ordered to cut airline passenger fees next year, which should impact ticket prices.
The Civil Aviation Authority ruled that lower fees were needed as passenger numbers recovered faster after the peak of the pandemic.
Passenger fees are paid by the airlines and factor into the cost of terminals, runways, baggage handling and security.
The average charge per passenger at Heathrow for 2023 is £31.57.
But the regulator said it would fall to £25.43 in 2024 and “remain broadly flat” by the end of 2026.
It is understood Heathrow bosses actually wanted to increase the charges to more than £40.
Although the fees are paid by the airlines, they can affect airfares if the companies choose to pass some costs on to passengers through airfares.
