The National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) is investigating possible food fraud involving prepackaged meat labeled as British but sourced from South America and Europe.
A UK retailer has been forced to remove products from its shelves.
The unit has refused to name the retailer or the supplier of the meat.
NFCU deputy chief Andrew Quinn said it is not a food safety issue, but food fraud, which he takes very seriously.
Products include pre-packaged meat and deli products.
Mr Quinn said: “The retailer was notified the same day that we took action against the food company suspected of fraud and immediately removed all affected product from their shelves.
“The retailer continues to work closely and cooperatively with the NFCU investigation to advance the case against the supplier. This is not a food safety issue, it is a food fraud issue.”
