Ed Sheeran, Adele and Harry Styles among richest Britons under 35

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Ed Sheeran, Adele and Harry Styles are among the richest people under the age of 35 in the UK.

The musicians are all worth an estimated £150million after success in the UK and US.

But they don’t have quite enough money to make it onto the main rich list, which requires people to have assets of £350m or more.

They include British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy, although their wealth has dwindled.

Among the under-35s, 32-year-old Ed Sheeran is the seventh richest with a fortune of £300m, helped by his fast-selling sixth album Subtract.

Adele, who is now 35, is ninth at £165million. The London-born singer has sold more than 100 million albums and earlier this year she announced that her luxurious stay in Las Vegas would be extended. This is reportedly costing £500,000 per show.

Harry Styles had the UK’s best selling album last year with ‘Harry’s House’ and is currently touring the UK. The 29-year-old’s net worth is estimated at £150million.

At the top of the most important wealth list is Gopi Hinduja and his family, who own a huge conglomerate of companies around the world and whose combined wealth is £35 billion, up from £28.4 billion last year.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe returns to the top 10 richest people in Britain after two years behind.

Sir Jim is now worth £29.6 billion and is perhaps best known for his struggle to buy Manchester United, his football team since childhood. He made his fortune with Ineos, a chemical and raw materials company.

While the rich list is made up of the super-rich, this is the first year the number of billionaires has fallen since the global financial crisis of 2008, when the banking industry nearly collapsed.

171 billionaires are now listed, six fewer than last year. The economic impact of Covid, high inflation and rising interest rates – making borrowing more expensive – have weighed on the wealth of the rich.

Sir Richard Branson, who recently told the BBC he fears losing everything during the pandemic, has seen his wealth almost halved to £2.4billion. The man behind Virgin Atlantic airline says he has lost £1.5billion because lockdowns have suspended flights and kept his hotels and gyms closed.

Mr Sunak and his wife Murthy’s fortunes have also fallen by £200m, from £730m last year to £529m.

Most of her wealth comes from Ms Murthy, who owns a sizeable stake in her father’s IT company Infosys.

The newly crowned King Charles III. ranks relatively low at 263 on the rich list with a fortune of £600m. However, he is wealthier than his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who owned £320million, according to last year’s list.

JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, is significantly wealthier. Her value is £875m, an increase of £25m from last year. She could be even richer – the author is reportedly in talks with TV network HBO about making a series of her most famous work.

Two of the stars of the Harry Potter films are now on the list of the richest under 35s. Daniel Radcliffe, 33, is worth £92million while Emma Watson, also 33, has an estimated net worth of £60million.
