Alexandar Georgiev made a season-high 44 saves for his seventh career hut, Chris Krieder broke a scoreless tie late in the second period and the New York Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0 on Sunday night.
It was the first shootout for Georgiev since beating Philadelphia 9-0 on March 17, 2021. Georgiev, who has just played for the second time in New York’s last five games, has won his first straight victory since Jan. 8 in Anaheim.
Frank Vatrano added an empty goal with 41.3 seconds to play to seal it for the Rangers.
The loss sent the Hurricanes to their first four-game losing streak of the season (0-3-1). It also marks the end of a 14-game home-ice-dot streak, a shyness of a franchise record. Frederik Andersen stopped 16 shots for the hurricanes, which were stopped for the third time this season.
FLYER 2, ISLANDERS 1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Kevin Hayes scored both goals for Philadelphia and the Flyers beat the New York Islanders in their first game since longtime captain Claude Giroux.
Joel Farabee and Travis Konecny both assisted for Philadelphia.
Casey Cizikas scored for the Islanders.
Giroux was sent to Florida on Saturday for first-round pick Owen Tippett, a conditional 2024 first-round pick and a 2023 third-round pick. Stopped last in the Metropolitan Division, Giroux waived his no-trade clause last year of his contract to stand a chance of winning his first Stanley Cup with the Eastern Conference-leading Panthers. A large poster on I-95 near the arena thanks Giroux for his time in Philadelphia, and much of the participation after Sport No. 28 Giroux jerseys.
STARS 3, CAPITALEN 2
WASHINGTON (AP) – Roope Hintz scored twice in Power Play for Alex Ovechkin’s 40.
The Stars only won for the second time in six games and moved one point back from the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. They still have 21 games, three more than the closest team they pursue: the Vegas Golden Knights.
Alexander Radulov also scored for Dallas. Jake Oettinger, who played on back-to-back days with Braden Holtby injured, made 36 saves.
Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky as the only player to score 40 goals in a season 12 times and gave Oettinger the 156th with an assist on Ovechkin’s 770.
Despite a third-period goal from Dmitry Orlov, the Capitals cracked their point streak to eight, losing regulation for the first time since Feb. 28 after a 7-0-1 run since hitting the calendar in March.
JETS 6, BLACKHAWKS 4
CHICAGO (AP) – Jansen Harkins scored twice, Kyle Connor scored his 39th goal of the season and Winnipeg beat Chicago.
Nikolaj Ehlers, Josh Morrissey and Blake Wheeler also shot, and Connor added two assists for the Jets. Andrew Copp added three assists, and Winnipeg won for the third time in four games to get their last wild-card spot within five points of the Western Conference.
Jonathan Toews, Dylan Strome, Taylor Raddysh and Philipp Kurashev all scored for Chicago. Patrick Kane set the goals for Strome and Raddysh.
SHARKS 4, COYOTES 2
SAN JOSE, California (AP) – Noah Gregor had the go-to goal in the third period and added an assistant to help San Jose rally along Arizona and shoot a three-game losing streak.
Timo Meier, Nick Bonino and Rudolfs Balcers also scored for San Jose, who left 2-1 in the third period with just under five minutes left after Arizona Lawson shot Crouse. But Meier equalized 22 seconds later when he beat Karel Vejmelka in the top corner. Gregor gave the Sharks their second goal in a 44-second span to give San Jose a 3-2 lead.
Balcers added an empty goal in the last minute for San Jose to seal it.
Phil Kessel also had a goal for the Coyotes.
