Imtiaz Tyab is a London-based CBS News correspondent and reports for all platforms, including “CBS Evening News,” “CBS Mornings,” “CBS Sunday Morning,” and the CBS News Streaming Network, the first 24/7 from CBS News. streaming news service. He joined the network in April 2019 and has extensive experience in reporting on the world’s major flash points, such as the Middle East and the war on terror.
Prior to CBS, Tyab was a correspondent for Al Jazeera English. He joined AJE in 2010 and covered the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti that killed more than 220,000 people and displaced some 3 million. He spent several years in Pakistan and was one of the first international journalists to report live from outside the Osama bin Laden compound after dying in a U.S. Special Forces raid, securing exclusive footage of the interior of the US ‘hiding place. It was also reported that an unknown teen education activist, now world-famous and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, had been shot in the head by the Taliban.
Tyab gained rare access to Pakistani covert drone war zones and joined the U.S. military in neighboring Afghanistan several times, even on training missions alongside the CIA. Tyab moved to the Middle East later that year and was based in Jerusalem. He also provided in-depth coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as national elections that saw Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu win a fourth term in power. Tyab moved to Beirut in 2016, where he covered Lebanese politics and reported extensively on the war in Syria, including the fall of Aleppo and the refugee crisis.
Prior to joining Al Jazeera English, Tyab was a London journalist for BBC News. It covered a general election, the 2007-08 global economic crisis and the deadly 2005 terrorist attacks on London’s transport network by British suicide bombers. He was assigned to the United States in 2009 to cover the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency. From Washington, he reported on the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor as the first Hispanic justice of the Supreme Court, the funeral of Senator Ted Kennedy, and the passage of the Economic Care Act.
Tyab studied journalism in his native Vancouver, beginning his career as a reporter for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
